Industrial psychology is an area in psychology that uses psychological findings to heighten work performance, choose employees e.t.c. Industrial psychologists have learned how to match some of the personalities of various workers with the type of jobs they are doing. There is a theory that argues that peoples’ personalities can be described in five terms. These are stable, outgoing, responsible, open and easygoing. A recent research shows that stable, responsible employees are valuable in any work.  In addition, one has to be easygoing and outgoing in order to succeed in any job dealing with the public.

The work of industrial psychologists is to work for businesses in which they are tasked in improving working conditions of employees as well as improving their productivity. Furthermore, they also advise their respective companies on ways and means of getting consumers to be interested in services and products. In essence, industrial psychologists work as consultants. They are hired by companies to resolve problems such as employee stress.

Industrial psychologists do not only advise managers, they are tasked with various other duties which include:

  • Training employees
  • Conducting psychological tests on employees
  • Interpreting statistics
  • Carry market surveys
  • Train managers on how to interview applicants
  • Counsel employees
  • Study the working place conditions
  • Come up with job applications guidelines

There is a shortage of personnel in the industrial psychology sector hence, the few available are sought after by several companies. If you are out there and you are defeated in making a career choice, then go for this lucrative job since its returns are overwhelming. Several factors like global recession and modern-day career tensions have resulted in heavy demand for specialists in psychology. Nowadays, most of the medium-sized and large organizations are hiring psychologists on a permanent basis unlike in the past when they were hired on contract basis.
