School Psychologist
Posted on October 13th, 2009 by adminStudents, regardless of their grade, need constant guidance and counseling in order to effectively cope with the different issues facing them and which are likely to have a negative effect on their studies. These issues include poor time management, sexually-related problems like early pregnancies, family problems like divorce and separation of parents, stress and depression. Students are also affected by poor self image and low self esteem, suicidal thoughts and lack of self discipline.
School Psychologists help young people succeed not only academically but also emotionally and socially. With the help of parents, educators and other professionals, they make the learning environment safer while at the same time improving the link between school and home life.
They deal with the students both in groups and as individuals. When dealing with an individual student, a school psychiatrist helps the student to understand his/her personal capabilities and come up with measures to ensure that the students utilize their maximum potential both inside and out of the classrooms. Their group sessions are meant to enable students develop interactive skills and learning how to cope with different types of people. These professionals also train parents and teachers on effective training methods and strategies that should be adopted both in classrooms and at home.
To become a school psychologist, one needs to have training in both psychology and education fields. A number of online programs are offered in various colleges and universities where the student gets the chance to study at their own pace and from the convenience of their home. The programs can either be on undergraduate or master’s level. A school psychologist course is not recognizable not until one is certified by the National School Psychology Certification Board (NSPCB).
School psychologists are not just limited to working in schools. They also work in school-based health centers’, community and state agencies, hospitals and other health facilities or at times can be in private practice. A school psychologist should be able to carry out extensive research on the best learning strategies that should be adopted in the evolving academic institutions and recommendations of how they will be implemented.
